Wendover Air Field was used during World War II to train over 1,000 aircrews, including the crew of the Enola Gay, a B-29 bomber that deployed the world’s first atomic weapon. All totaled, over 1,000 air crews completed their training at Wendover airfield. In 1944, the 509th composite group comprised of the famous B-29 crews of the Enola Gay and Bocks Car trained here for the deployment of the first atomic weapons.
